Soweto (Part 2)

Soweto (Part 2)
1) lunch at restaurant recommended by our guide Khumbulani
2) John, Khumbulani and I
3) John accepts K's offer/dare to try a native dish: tripe! He ate every bite. A couple of hours later, I inquired, "How is your stomach?"
He replied, "They're both doing fine."
4) When we returned K to his office near Joburg MTC, we found ourselves in middle of missionary transfer day in parking lot. Here you see a wave of missionaries; it reminded me of my missionary children.

Madikwe Game Reserve

Following is a peek of our first "game drive" at Madikwe Game Reserve. Photo descriptions top to bottom (listing is my solution to not being able to insert text properly):

(1) Our guide Sam keeps us safe during our mid-drive snacktime from Land Rover dining table.

(2) Sunset on Madikwe Game Reserve...reminds one of West Texas, mesquite, thorn trees and heavy dry matted grass. Winter conditions make the animals easier to see.

(3) What you see seems entirely fortuitous, but with nine sharp-eyed trekkers, if it's there, we spotted it, approached, and shot a million pictures.

(4) Mothers everywhere are protective of their babies.

More to come!

Bead Nest

Sister Parmley engineered outing to West African bead trader visiting Joburg. Selah gave us missionaries wholesale price, he said!

Sensory overload?
Safe and predictable selections for me. Raw material for a bead party.

The skewered position of maps photo is a metaphor for our confusion! This blog is a work in progress.

Winter Weekend

Who says missionaries don't live in gated communities? Does it keep them in, or you out?
This tent was gathering spot for Pentecostal/tribal funeral of our legal intern's sister-in-law and child. We could stand and sway to the Praise Band, and support the preachers with Hallelujah and Amen.

Want to go to church? Even with a GPS, two maps and notes, an 8 am start, we found the church at 10 am. No quadratic City of Zion here. Our goal is to arrive at 9 am next time.
The trip to church was worth it, if only to meet gracious Carole Morrison and husband Andy, also visiting the church. They invited us to their cozy home for Sunday lunch and friendship.
